Pelvic Mobility for Birth & Beyond — How Movement Supports a Smoother Labour and Recovery

Your pelvis is designed to move, but modern life, sitting, injuries and daily tension often restrict that movement.
When mobility and alignment are off, your baby’s path through the pelvis can be harder and unfortunately this can make labour longer.

That’s why inside AlignBirth, we don’t wait until labour to think about movement.
We focus on the biomechanics of birth — how your body and baby work together in birth — throughout pregnancy and into recovery.

🤰 Prenatal: Creating Space with Movement

Your pelvis isn’t a fixed structure.
It’s made up of several bones and joints, supported by muscles, ligaments, and fascia, that expand  contract to create space for your baby.

This soft tissue network is what allows movement.
But when it becomes tight or imbalanced, the pelvis loses its freedom to move, and that can make labour more challenging.

✨ The pelvic inlet allows baby to enter the pelvis.
✨ The mid-pelvis is where baby rotates and descends.
✨ The pelvic outlet is where the sacrum needs to move back to make space for baby’s head to be born.

During pregnancy, we want to maintain mobility and release soft tissue tension to support the mobility needed when the time comes in labour but also to support baby into an optimal position, because a well-positioned baby supports a smoother labour process.

It doesn’t matter how much “force” is used during birth (whether through synthetic oxytocin or assisted delivery) if baby isn’t in a good position or the pelvis is restricted, progress can be difficult.

That’s why mobility isn’t a luxury — it’s foundational.

How We Work With This Inside AlignBirth

In AlignBirth, every movement session has this biomechanical focus — it’s not theory, it’s practice.
And that’s where most traditional antenatal prep misses out.
You can read about stages of labour, but you’re rarely taught how to prepare your body to support it.

We gain confidence through repetition, through practice.
So when labour begins, your body instinctively moves to support your birth.

Our movement patterns are designed to:
🌿 Improve pelvic mobility
🌿 Release soft tissue tension
🌿 Support baby’s position
🌿 Reduce pain and prepare your body for birth

Because when your body moves freely, birth flows more smoothly and recovery begins from a stronger, calmer foundation.

🤱 Postnatal: Restoring Mobility After Birth

After birth, the focus often shifts straight to rebuilding strength but recovery also depends on restoring mobility and softness.

One of the biggest things I hear from members is:

“I just feel so tight.”

And it makes perfect sense.
After months of pregnancy, the physical changes of birth, feeding postures, carrying your baby, and sleep deprivation, the body naturally becomes guarded and tense.

Healing tissues, protective movements, and daily habits can all lead to restriction.
That’s why recovery starts with reconnection.

We begin with diaphragmatic breathing, gentle core awareness, and deep foundational work to rebuild stability from the inside out, while also reintroducing mobility to restore comfort and freedom.

A healthy pelvic floor is both strong and flexible.
Many women can think “tight” equals strong — but that’s not the goal.
We want a pelvic floor that moves, that responds, that can both contract and release.
That’s what makes it truly functional.

Inside AlignBirth’s First 6 Weeks Recovery Programme, this balance is built in, from breath to movement, strength to stretch, meeting you exactly where you’re at.
And it continues seamlessly into the 10-Week Postnatal Rehab Programme, supporting your return to strength and confidence step by step.
